Get a firm and safe grasp with a VemaTec grab

When you’re looking for a demolition or sorting grab, you often hear things such as “we sell grabs”, “deliverable from stock” and “we’ve been specialists for years”. These comments do have an effect on consumers behaviour. However, what else should you pay attention to when you are thinking of buying a grab? Here are a several extremely important details to keep in mind. We will be pleased to explain why we can make all the difference.

A block behind the exchangeable cutting edge

In a previous blog entry, I wrote about the usefulness of a block behind the exchangeable cutting edge. You can eliminate lateral loads on bolts by placing a block behind the cutting edges, which prevents the bolt holes in your cutting edge from wearing out in an oval pattern. Our VemaTec demolition and sorting grabs are fitted with these blocks which favour the durability of the grab.

The rippers are manufactured from high-quality steel and do not have a welded shank. This makes the rippers slightly more flexible when picking up small pieces, otherwise this would twist the hinges and subject them to play.

The slewing ring on VemaTec demolition or sorting grabs is fitted with larger roller bearings which enable the grab to rotate 360°. The difference is visible when you compare 2 grabs side by side. The slewing ring is mainly visible under the adaptor plate and clearly shows that this is often half as high again as a similar grab. This has a positive effect on the tensile load. There are also demolition and sorting grabs that have rotary wankel engines which act as a coupling between the adaptor plate and the rippers, though the tensile loads on these are likely to vary considerably (1 to 2 tons). In the 6-11-ton class of machine, the VemaTec grab can effortlessly manage a tensile load of more than 50 tons.

By using long bolts in the slewing ring part, the bolts never break or work themselves loose. Any overload of the slewing ring is absorbed by the strain on the bolts. The roller bearings retain their lubricant bath for longer and are less susceptible to wear because dirt is unable to enter the bath.

High gripping power

The gripping power of the demolition or sorting grab is determined by the pressure from the machine that exerts force on the cylinders. The gripping power can have a great influence of both the slewing ring and the pins and bushings. The cylinders are positioned in such a way that the forces applied to the main frame are halved. Furthermore, the cylinders have end cushioning which gives the grab a larger opening, for instance for picking up drive plates. Any play that occurs is also reduced because the 4 chromed, toughened pins do not have a grease nipple and/or channels. The cylinders are mounted so that together with the hoses and couplings they are virtually motionless and as a result will hardly ever leak.

The grease nipples can be easily accessed on the outside of the bushings and the slewing ring. These should be lubricated every 8 hours of operation. Furthermore, the hinge points are sealed with dust seals and provide optimum durability in conjunction with all the other features mentioned.
